This is for you if you think ...."when it comes to computers I'm thick!" Make Yourself a Cuppa and Read on... Right! you've been out and bought yourself a PC or laptop but you don't know how to switch the damn thing on nevermind get on that that bl**dy internet thingy? If your frustrated and confused then stick with me and I'll help you. I started out in computers by messing around at home and then going on a college course to further it but the course I went on only taught me all about Microsoft Office programs and I was left to learn computers myself. Since then I've been to college again but on much more advanced courses to educate myself and make a career out of computing after 10 years on the sick with a damaged spine due to "grafting" for a living for many years. Now I think I'm ready to unleash my talents upon you and help you get the most out of your computer. I'll list a load of helpful tips below and just keep adding to them in time as I find the people of South Tyneside are needing them. I can't help you download films, music etc. as that's illegal so please don't ask as it puts us in an awkward position when you ring the work phone. This guide is aimed at being something totally different from what you've ever heard or read as it comes from my head and nowhere else. If your a geek or think your a geek then move on this is not for you ok? This guide is for complete beginners that you haven't got the time for and my competitiors will not like me posting the info on the net but I think this is my way of giving you the info you need so stuff em all! I can't go too far otherwise ultimitely I'll do my kids out of food but I will do my best to make sure you get the best of your computer ;) Switching It On Imagine getting up on a morning, running a cold bath then jumping into it? how would you react? ARRRRGH! me thinks? Thats exactly how a computer reacts when you switch it on at the power button and electricity floods all the parts. This goes for your modem (de-modulator) router and other hardware too. If you leave a computer etc. switched on at the plug via an anti-surge adaptor overnight but set the computer/laptop to "stand by" this would leave the computers main components active with very little electrical usage (honestly I mean it). For those of you that worry about the lecky costs, I bet your the ones without smoke alarms in every room too eh? I've been to many houses around our region and have found this is nearly always the case. GET SMOKE ALARMS FITTED NOW! It doesn't matter that your bill is a tiny bit higher and you've had to buy a few 9 volt batteries. We're talking about lives at risk here! We've got 5 smoke alarms all over the house, all checked all the time and we suggest you do the same. I'll even fit them for you if there's no-one else you can get! Using the PC Sorry about dribbling on a bit but I feel it really needs to be put across how dangerous it is not to have smoke alarms fitted. Now then, you've switched it on at the power button and loaded it up. You'll be presented with either a set up screen or a "log on screen" if its a PC depending on where you bought it from? Probably a VISTA PC or laptop? Windows VISTA is the latest software (operating system) release from Microsoft who pioneered computer operating systems way back when I was just a twinkle in me dad's eye, LOL (LOL means "laugh out loud" which you'll see a lot on the internet as you go...) VISTA means "wide open", or "panoramic" which means its got a wide open view about it ok? You need to grasp the basics of it, I won't delve into the deeper parts of it as your head will explode but just trust my judement when you here people say "VISTA's crap" etc. as these people are very probably used to Windows XP which is the older version of the Microsoft operating system you've probably got and is to become their one and only operating system very soon so get used to it. These people do not understand VISTA, they're used to an operating system that they know their way around and find it difficult to change where as new users to computers are being given VISTA and are loving it so you make the best of that ;) more coming soon... |
